Moving into our first home was a whirlwind of emotions—exciting, overwhelming, and oh-so rewarding. It marked the start of a new chapter for our family, and while it came with its share of challenges, it also taught us a lot. Whether you’re moving into your first place or your fifth, I’m sharing some tried-and-true tips that made our transition smoother, plus a few hacks to save your sanity during the process.

The Planning Stage: Start Strong

1. Create a Moving Checklist

Before you pack the first box, jot down everything that needs to be done—from changing your address to booking a moving truck. Having a checklist keeps you organized and helps prevent those “Oh no, I forgot!” moments.

Pro Tip: Use a free app like Trello or a printable checklist to track your progress.

2. Purge Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter. As I packed, I asked myself, “Do I love this? Do I use this?” If not, it was donated or tossed. Less stuff = fewer boxes to move!

Hack: Host a “goodbye clutter” sale or list items on Facebook Marketplace for extra cash.

3. Budget for the Unexpected

Expenses can pile up quickly, so plan ahead. Set aside funds for things like movers, packing supplies, or that first trip to Home Depot for tools you didn’t realize you’d need.

Packing Like a Pro

1. Label Everything

Don’t just write “kitchen” on a box—be specific! “Kitchen: Dishes & Glassware” makes unpacking so much easier.

Hack: Use colored tape or stickers to assign a color to each room. It’s a lifesaver on moving day when everyone’s asking, “Where does this go?”

2. Pack an Essentials Box

Think of this as your survival kit. Fill it with everything you’ll need right away—cleaning supplies, snacks, a change of clothes, phone chargers, and toiletries. Trust me, you don’t want to dig through 10 boxes just to find toothpaste.

3. Protect Fragile Items

Wrap breakables in clothes, towels, or linens to save on bubble wrap (and pack two things at once!). Double up on fragile boxes with “This Way Up” arrows for added care.

Moving Day Hacks

1. Enlist Help

Whether it’s friends, family, or hired movers, extra hands make the day go faster. Just don’t forget to show your appreciation—pizza and drinks go a long way!

2. Take Photos Before Unpacking

Snap pics of empty rooms to document their condition for landlords or for personal memories of “how it started.” Bonus: These photos also help if you’re planning décor ideas!

3. Set Up Bedrooms First

By the end of moving day, you’ll be too tired to do much else. Make sure beds are assembled, linens are ready, and your family has a cozy spot to crash.

Settling Into Your New Space

1. Unpack Room by Room

Start with the most-used areas (kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom). Tackling one room at a time helps you feel accomplished without being overwhelmed.

2. Prioritize Essentials Over Perfection

It’s tempting to decorate every corner right away, but give yourself grace. Focus on functionality first, then slowly add your personal touch.

3. Meet Your Neighbors

A simple hello goes a long way. You never know—you might gain a new friend or a helping hand down the road!
